A Month Before the Run
Road Closure Leafleting
Are you local to Jericho and have a spare 30 minutes one evening in May? Before the event we need to ensure that local residents are aware of road closures, so we put road closure leaflets through post boxes and on cars for those directly affected.
The Day Before the Run
Course Setup Part 1
Would you have some time to spare the day before the event to help place signs and arrows around the course? Maps with location markers will be provided. If we have enough volunteers to divide the course into small sections, then there is always time for a drink/snack afterwards at a local pub/cafe.
Road Closure Setup
Ever role play as a construction worker as a child? Well now, you get to do again but with real barriers, cones and signs! A team of 3 volunteers works well for this task. One to drive their own van around Jericho, another to read a map of road closure locations and direct the driver and a third to hop in and out of the van to place the barriers, cones etc. at their designated location.
Trial Runners
Can’t get enough of running? Three lucky volunteers have the opportunity to test run each of the 3 courses the day before and give feedback to the race committee on the positioning of signs, etc.
The Day of the Run
Course Setup Part 2
We need an extra early bird to mark out a small section of the course with gluten free flour the morning of the event.
Site Setup
The early bird gets the worm for this one! Volunteers are needed to help set up before the event opens at 8:00 a.m. Tables and chairs need to be positioned according to their location on the site map. Signs directing runners to important areas require mounting. Food/snacks, merchandise, medals etc. to be moved onto their display tables and more! Some light lifting is required and heavy lifting is done in teams.
Photographers
We are looking for volunteer photographers to capture the day in all its marvellous glory, please get in touch if you think you can help.
Marshalls
Do you have time to spare during the event? We wouldn’t be able to run the event without the generous help from our marshals who line the route. So what does marshalling involve:
- Approximately 2 hours of your time
- Direct runners to follow the correct route while wearing a high-visibility vest
- Cheer on runners and generally be awesome!
- Help manage car flow and ensure drivers abide road restrictions where applicable
An experienced group of Sector Marshalls and a Chief Marshall will always be on hand throughout the course for support! Details will also be shared ahead of time and a briefing will be conducted the morning of so all volunteers are comfortable with their role.
Check-in and Registration Tables
Run Jericho has continued to expand since our humble beginnings and more runners means more volunteers to check them in! This job lends itself well to working in pairs, one person to match the runner’s name to their bib number and the other to retrieve the correct bib number from the pile and give to the runner.
For extra fun, your pair can volunteer at the Registration Table. The process is similar, except it involves an extra step of assigning runners who have only just registered a bib number using an app! Whichever role you choose, a team will be there to support you on the day and there will be a briefing in the morning of the event around 7:30 a.m.
Little Helpers
Children are welcome to help too! There are so many well-suited tasks for little helpers such as refilling water cups at the water stations, tidying up the emergency contacts table so pens, markers, safety pins etc. stay neatly on the table, handing out medals to runners finishing the course, managing the queue for free ice cream, restocking the refreshments table and washing up when required.
Big Helpers
It takes a village to raise a child and to ensure Run Jericho runs (pun intended) smoothly! Volunteers are needed at the…
- Refreshments Table – Ensure snacks and drinks are restocked and facilitate transactions by use of an app on their mobile phone and a card machine
- Merchandise Table – Display merchandise by type and size and process purchases via an app on their mobile phone and card machine
- Water Stations – There is a water station at the start/finish line and another just after the 5k mark of the 10 km course. We need volunteers to ensure all runners who need water get some … it is an event held in summer after all!
The Tortoise and the Hare
While this is a school fundraising event, we’re not talking about Aesop’s fable! We need a runner to follow at the rear of the course known as “the tortoise” to ensure no one is left behind. In addition, we need a fast runner known as “the hare” to lead the pack for the 1-mile fun run.
Road Closure Clear up
At the end of the event in the afternoon, we will need 3 volunteers to recover all road closure items, ensure all items are accounted for and place them back at the school. It is recommended that this team be the same as for the Road Closure Setup.
Course and Site Clear up
The unsung role of any event is course and site clear up. From taking down signs to litter pick and site pack up, all help is GREATLY appreciated.
In the Future...
Disc Jockey and Emcee
We already have a fantastic DJ and MC arranged this year, but in future years we will need someone to spin up some energising tunes and fire up our runners.
Warm Up and Cool Down Coordinator
A warmup before physical activity and a cooldown afterwards can greatly reduce the risk of injury. We have a wonderful coordinator this year, but we will need someone to lead those stretches in future years.
